Invented by Ohio-born mechanical engineer Charles Stilwell in 1882, the high-quality SOS bag has been a favorite for years because it stands up and is easy to fill. This invention improved the experience for store owners and shoppers and led to the introduction of the shopping bag with handles in 1912.

SOS bag patent

Charles Stilwell was a resident of Fremont, Ohio, according to the Ohio History Center. He served in the American Civil War in the Union Army. After the conflict, Stilwell returned to Fremont to begin a career as a mechanical engineer.

Stilwell devoted his free time to making improved high-quality paper bags. Paper bags or grocery bags already exist, but they are not easy to fold or store. They also cannot stand on their own due to their V-shaped bottom. On June 12, 1883, the U.S. Patent Office granted Stilwell a patent for a machine for making square bottom bags. There are also pleats on the sides of the bag. The square bottom allows the bag to stand on its own, while the pleats allow for easy folding and storage of the bag when not in use.

Stilwell's invention greatly improved the paper bag, making it more popular with American consumers. Essentially, Stilwell's bag was the forerunner of the modern paper bag. In 2000, Americans used approximately 40 billion high-quality shopping bags based on Stilwell's original designs.

Double-wax high-quality SOS bags are great for lunches, baked goods, and snacks, they stand up on their own to fill up and keep food fresh. With their excellent grease resistance, they can also be used in frozen foods without additional packaging steps.
